![]() The player must craft equipment that will allow her to breathe underwater for longer, such as high-capacity oxygen tanks, as well as vehicles. At the start of the game, the player can only hold her breath for 45 seconds and if she dives below 100 m, she will lose oxygen at a faster rate. ![]() The main issue with accessing deep sections of the water is oxygen capacity. The final objective of the game is in fact located at the very deepest point in the game world. Generally, the game requires the player to visit ever-deeper sections of the game in order to find exotic materials, technology to scan, and complete objectives. Alongside raw materials, finding new crafting recipes is a major reason to explore. The player learns new recipes by scanning scraps of technology or recovering databoxes, which are strewn across the game world. Inside a habitat, the player can also craft living amenities such as beds or coffee tables, although these are purely cosmetic since the game does not track fatigue.Įach piece of equipment that can be crafted has its own recipe and the player begins the game knowing only a handful of recipes. Habitat structures provide shelter, storage for equipment and collected materials, and crafting stations. Each of these has its own recipe, and some ingredients can only be found in the far-flung and deeper corners of the game world. To survive and complete objectives, player must collect raw materials from the environment and craft equipment, vehicles, shelters, and food. Players collect resources, construct tools, build bases and submersibles, and can interact with the planet's wildlife. Like its predecessor, the player's goal is to explore the environments and survive in an alien environment while also completing objectives to advance the game's plot. All in all, despite the few technical issues, Subnautica is an extraordinarily fun game worthy of your time and money.Subnautica: Below Zero is a survival adventure game set in an open world environment and played from a first-person perspective. Couple that with excellent sound effects - like hearing the moans of predatory creatures swimming near you - and professional voice acting and music, and you'll get a sense of the production values here. The game is a real stunner, with high-resolution graphics, impressive lighting, and amazing special effects (including very realistic-looking water). One of the first memorable moments is discovering and investigating the huge spaceship that brought you to this alien world to begin with. Once you're in the first of a few different vessels, you'll quickly get the hang of navigation and control, so you can focus on the core gameplay element - survival - as you follow waypoints to complete various goals, and choose flight or fight based on the threats that await you (some can't be killed, so you'll need to think of alternative approaches). Also, you can choose to play how you like: Creative mode allows you to explore underwater worlds and build bases without having to worry about health upkeep or resource costs Survival mode is more difficult, as you must manage health, hunger, and hydration and the aptly named Hardcore mode only gives you one life and no O2 alerts, to truly test your survival skills. Plus, those who prefer twitchy action might not appreciate the slower-paced scavenger hunt nature of the game, but Subnautica is really, really good. There are some minor technical issues - such as images that suddenly pop up, and long-ish load times. Also, for fans of horror movies and games, Subnautica does have some terrifying moments. ![]() Subnautica - which took more than five years to create - is highly recommended, especially for those who love marine exploration, crafting items, and puzzle-solving, and a solid story to tie everything together. ![]() This is a breathtakingly beautiful, challenging, and immersive open-world adventure that grabs you from the start and doesn't let go.
